The Atco Range Of Cylinder Mowers
The Atco name is associated with outstanding performance and reliabilityand Atco is proud to hold two royal warrants from the Queen and the Prince of Wales.
Atco has been a famous name in mowers for over 80 years.
Atco - the world's best name in cylinder lawnmower manufacture: Atco produced its first framed 22" petrol powered lawnmowers in 1922.
These heavy machines were sold at £75 each by salesmen using a specially modified motor cycle and sidecar combination.
In 1935 a new steel chassis was introduced to replace the cast iron version, reducing weight significantly.
During the war years the 100,000 sq. ft. of floor space at the company's Birmingham site was given over to munitions production.
In the post war period the Birmingham sites grew four-fold.
Full time mower production and servicing heralded the beginning of a 'boom' period for domestic lawnmower manufacturers.
In 1955 Atco received its first Royal warrant, granted by Queen Elizabeth II for Atco's tractors and lawnmowers.
In 1964, the first Atco Royale, which has since become a degin classic, was introduced.
In 1975, lawnmower production moved from the West Midlands to the Stowmarket site of Suffolk Iron Foundry (1920) Ltd (just down the road from our warehouse, in fact).
In 1986, a second Royal warrant by HRH Prince of Wales was added to the portfolio.
In 1996, Atco celebrated its 75th anniversary and remains the leading cylinder mower manufacturer in the world.
